MASONIC MONDAY: R.E. OLDS

So you're into cars are you?

Immediately my mind jumped back to high school. REO Speed Wagon.

As you can see this is just part 1, so if you'd like to read more when you're done just go to the archives.

I apologize for the difference in scans. Apparently when I first scanned these I didn't save the crops on the last 3 images and had to re-do that. Since the original scanning the photo/image program automatically updated and this is what you get when using it now. I've said it before. If I want to update something I will do it, but these changes that I didn't ask for drive me NUTS. I do mean that literally I am not one who wants or needs change at least it is an extreme rarity. When things are forced upon me like this I just soon blow up the whole world, see literally it drives me nuts. I am a simple man and have absolutely no problem with the philosophy "if it ain't broke.....don't fix it".  Moving on.

Again I apologize for the "change" it wasn't my doing.

Franken Friday

Finally, it is has been years on the back burners. Back in 2014 I posted my first Franken-Set. It was an all Braves set by the numbers yada yada yada. The typical Franken-Set. (oh I certainly have added to that binder or rather picked up a few more cards to fill in some holes). One day one year I'll re-post that whole binder, but ever since then I have hoarded cards for several other Franken-Sets. I may have even posted the 2nd one along time ago too. Don't remember, what I do remember is the stacks of cards that were placed all over for other sets. I do have 2 binders (supposed to be 3) for jersey #s and a monster box that needs added to those, but unless I find the misplaced binder I'll have to scrap that one. I also have a monster box full of players who played on at least 5 teams for another Franken-Set, but that one is a very long way from being ready maybe years in fact. What is ready this year and right now are the FOUR main ones' that were sitting here in those stacks of cards waiting to be united with me plus the additions I gathered while away from home.  Those four SETS are as follows.

1) Number ONES: this Franken-Set only contains cards that occupy that #1 spot of a set.

2) Easy as 1-2-3: this one is made up with cards numbered 123.

3) Triplets: aka TRIPS: triple digit same numbered cards (111, 222, 333, etc).

that one will start tonight!

4) Last but not Least: consists of the last card of a set, be it base, insert, checklist whatever.

Franken-Sets 1, 2, and 4 have been consolidated but not reorganized, but that shouldn't be much of an issue, then I can scan and binder them. Set 3 is going to take the longest as it has the most cards. That is why we are starting with that one. I have been paging them up as I have completed sorting them and have been entering them into a database of mine (excel). I have about half of the cards done already and here is the skiddy:

111 have the most cards and they do decrease as we progress through the ranks for obvious reasons, more and more card sets are limited to 150, 200, 250, 300 cards so that reduces the volume. Now by no means do I have anywhere close to all of  any of the numbers. What I do have are 295 (111's), so I will spread the scans over two weeks.

I tallied up some stats regarding them too and will have that at the end of tonight's post.

Here we go:

A lot of the "cards missing" are not really missing (Topps flagship/traded cards that is), but sitting in a few monster boxes for another project that I have been building/hoarding for 10 years.  So other than some of the vintage cards (50's and earlier) no need to be sending me any regular Topps (60's to present). Non Topps is a different story. Then again some of those aren't missing either as they could be in one of my keeper guy boxes which BTW I have actually started the process of sorting them.

It would have saved me a whole lot of time/work/scanning had I just scanned them before I put them into the binder.

I posted more than half of triple 1's and we still didn't hit the 2000's. UGH! Next week will have fewer cards but more scans as I "cropped" them here and there.

Now for some stats.

The team with the most 111's was the Braves! They had 22 winners. Yea....

2nd and 3rd place are the Athletics with 16, and Mariners with 14 (plus there were two Pilots if that counts).

The players with the most cards were Dan Wilson who had three all 2000 Topps a base, HTA, and Limited Ed. Ron Coomer also had 3 entrys a 2000 SkyBox, 2002 Topps base and an HTA.

I will wrap the triple 1's next Friday then hit the Deuces the following week. There aren't as many of those but still a good bit and over 200. The 3's 4's 5's 6's will be a normal amount of scanned cards, but those aren't the only ones I have 7's and 8's too. I probably have a 999 is my dupes box (either upper deck or Conlon...who knows may even more like quads). No I ain't going there.

Have a great weekend I am going to a toy show tomorrow.

More from Jacksonville

Before getting this post rolling a little bit of good news for me. I am well on my way of getting back to the pre-Georgia schedule/routine.

Most of you know that I belong to a trading group called OCT (OLDCARDTRADERS). No, that isn't because of our age! It's because the main focus of the group is old cards. Here is this morning closeout on the most recent trading period (which is 3 months). The rules are for most people you have to make 3 trades per period basically 1 a month. At some point you have enough trades done that you only have to make 1 trade for the period (that's me). Easy to do because you don't actually have to make a trade the old fashioned although many do. You simply send at least 1 card or envelope/package to someone in the group. That's it  pretty easy.

92nd Trading Period

Welcome to the 92nd OCT Trading Period!

The 91st OCT Trading Period was our best Trading Period ending in August since 2011 as we managed to make 488 Trades.

Congrats go out to John Miller for leading the pack with 170 Trades this time.

He has now accomplished this feat times.

We had 9 Members exceed their Trader Point Total from the previous Trading Period.

Congrats go out to the following Members.

Benson

Blackwood

D'Angelo

Dworchak

Goetsch

Griffin

Miller

Morales

Stamper

I’m looking forward to the new Trading Period and hopefully it is equal if not better than the 91st Trading Period.

Happy Trading!

Len.

CORRECTION FROM LAST NIGHT: The Pinnacle set are 1996, 97, & 98.

Okay now for the regular post.

I do have several post left with the goodies picked up at the beginning of the month. (I could actually post for all of next month). I won't d that. too much scanning would be required. I did scan up a LOT from that vintage monster box I bought. Tonight I will showcase the set build needs, and save the "card I was surprised to find in the box" for a few posts. Yes, there were that many. Enough to load up 3 full posts of cards that shouldn't have been in a quarter box let alone a four cent box which is what I wound up paying for each card by buying the whole box.

I was tempted to scan the card backs because I am pretty sure a third of the cards were high numbered cards. I didn't though. High numbered vintage in a quarter box no way. But seeing was believing. Anyways before starting I broke down what was in the box.

1000 vintage football cards 50 &60's.

500 vintage basketball cards 60's & 70's.

I have already made about 2 dozens trades with just those!

The rest was baseball. 1950's to 1980 (but only 45 cards from 80'). Six years dominated the box and here are those numbers.

1968 Topps: 300 cards

1969 Topps: 250 cards

1972 Topps: 100 cards

1974 Topps: 500 cards

1976 Topps: 700 cards

1978 Topps: 600 cards

Leaving roughly a thousand cards from the other years. There were quite a bit of 57' Topps too. I should have counted them as well.  Remind you a third of these were high numbers. Crazy stuff, but I'm good.

Here were my set build needs.

A few stars right from the start.

Most of the cards weren't even in bad shape. I will have to upgrade a few though. And many of the cards here tonight were upgrades themselves.

I forget why I scanned dupes of  Browne. Maybe it was one of the variations, I forget now. I am sure I put a sticky on the back reminding me. As you can see the 68's were tremendous in knocking out cards from that needs list.

Same goes for the series 7 checklists.

That 72' will certainly be one to be replaced/upgraded. It is so mis-cut, hey that a Braves card on the bottom. Check out that WASHINGTON Willie McCovey.....so so sweet knocking that need out.

Here the last Red checklist unmarked that I needed to upgrade. The other checklist are also unmarked not that I needed them, but vintage unmarked checklists are keepers.

They ain't the purdiest cards but I needed these four. There was another couple dozen of these in the box too. By these I mean 68' Topps game cards. I should have three posts highlighting other cards ie: Superstars and such. I post one or two of those next week. I have 7 more posts in total from the August Jax. card show.

Tomorrow night (if I get the scanning done in time) will be the start of Franken-Friday!

A completed set!

When it comes to modern day sets rather set builds (I don't build every set), I get a little eh easy on myself when it comes to SP's. Such is the case with Topps Finest as per their usual the last cards in the set are all SP's and prospects/rookies to boot. The total set this year 2023 is 125 cards. The last 25 being the SP's of which I do have one of #124. I have completed the base or main set if you will.

I put the inserts I got recently with the scan. I also grabbed some others when at the August Jax. card show which I have yet to finish posting on (several posts left).

Eventually we will be doing Wacky Wednesday today, but I am just get starting with a couple of the other themed posts this week, so for now I will use other filler for mid week posts.

I did drive over to Ormond Monday thinking I could get my hands on some of the newly released Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary. I grabbed about 500 out of the dime box and wound up paying nothing for them as in ZERO. I got 290 different cards (14 braves with 4 dupes) so basically 2/3 of the set. No doubt I will be completing that set soon. Yeah I have decided to build it, and the previous one too seeing that I pretty much have the set in my dupes boxes and PC boxes. I just need to dig them out. No posting from the Ormond trip Monday though. I spent $40.00 on an unopened box of 1997 Donruss (I wanted to get at the Diamond Kings inserts) and get some ripping done at the same time. I pulled two of Jeter's 2nd year card and traded 1 of them to a guy working at the shop to get the 1500 dime cards I grabbed in total for free. That works. Kyle wasn't there otherwise they still probably wouldn't have cost me much if anything.

Being this post is a set completion posts I figure here is a good spot to mention when thumbing through an old data file I have saved I ran across 3 completed sets that I never posted to that completed set blog I ran for a minute. I believe they were 1992, 1993, and 1994 Pinnacle. (UPDATED ON THRUSDAY THEY ARE 1996-1998). So I'll let you guys decide whether or not I should post them here, that is if you want to see them. Just say YES or NO below. also I am wondering if any of you that read the Burl Ives article actually looked up and listened to the goober peas song.
