Vets Day

First, thank you to my fellow Veterans. Without the service you provide or provided we would not be able to enjoy our hobby of sports cards as we do if at all. So many freedoms we take for granted and we shouldn't. Collecting pieces of cardboard may seem so minor, but if you put some deep thought into it, you realize that everything that we have, do, and don't do are privileges provided to us by those who served especially those who gave their lives. In their honor todays' cards are of players who share their birthday with Veterans Day.

I know there are many more, but these are what I had pulled and stored for honoring this day. Whenever I obtain bulk lots of cards I go through them looking at everything including the birth date. I know this seems ridiculous, but I truly appreciate the freedom of having cardboard and look forward to finding a reason to keep a card regardless of who is on it or the intrinsic value it may or may not have.  thank you again Vets!

Monday Mini Madness

Here are a few more "names" that got passed by: Gary Matthews and Jr, Tony Armas and Jr., how about Joe Black, a character in a movie "Meet Joe Black" played by Brad Pitt. I have also included the "other" Pedro Martinez (A.) that I mention previously.

I plan on picking up this mini collection where I left off, with the actual card that started it all 1966 Topps JOHN MILLER.

Wacky Wednesday plus

Just a couple today. I didn't have time to scan up any new ones for this weeks Wacky Wednesday. I did have a couple already loaded and here they are.

Now for the plus.

Do remember when Upper Deck first came out? I do. Now this may seem like a kudos for Upper Deck, I assure you it is not. They have put out some great sets from time to time, like my ALL-TIME favorite Ovation. However, looking at the masses of cards that have accumulated over the last year or so (those cards which do not fit into my collection anywhere, but I just could not turn down the deal.

So I searched through those cards, more the junk wax than any other but not always and managed to worm out many that did fit into my collection somewhere. I will be doing a "card dump" very soon, but more on that at the end of this post.  Back to Upper Deck:


I am quite pleased with the first few years of UD. 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, and last amongst the early years 94. The main sets, it was around this time I remember the "cheap" version breaking into the hobby as collector's choice the original motto.  From there it just got crazy as did all of the other manufactures/card companies. But for now we deal with UD. Those early years were Great cards with a variety of awesome photos, some vertical, some horizontal, some on the front (most important), and some on the card backs. Some even had wacky shots too!

The portrait look as seen here with Quisenberry. The Wacky exercise shot on Armstrong, Pitchers in action (not just pitching), celebratory shots.  All great pieces of cardboard.

A little plate action and an odd looking turning two perhaps.

These are just some GREAT card BACKS.

After 1994 UD photo quality dropped off a bit as did the card designs. I really became disinterested until the Ovation set came out. Loved it from the start, especially that first year which was the BOMB!  I do believe their photo quality came back some what when they took over Fleer. It is as if they totally switched up everything about the photos used for the cards. In fact looking at most modern UD I can't help but feel like I am looking at the upper end Fleer cards from the 90s like Ultra. Maybe it's just me.  OH well, I ranted enough.....Now to talk more about the card dump.

Over the next couple of months I plan on sending out a bunch of flat rate boxes to many of my followers. Especially those that have a specific team they collect, just makes it easier. But not to fret to those who don't do that, I will also be sending out boxes to those mini set collectors, as many of those are embedded into my head as well as in my collection. I can't promise anything, but I will try my best to keep from doubling up cards.

last minute additions

Ran through some of my Braves doubles, and ran across a few more for the Name Game that I had previously left out (you remember me being lazy). Let's show those that should have been shown already, the rest can wait their turn.



Starting off I did NOT scan papa Hairston, although I did put him in the binder. I know he isn't a Brave, but I dug up a couple that weren't so shoot me, JK  I don't want to  be shot.

This guy has a counterpart you maybe more familiar with, Musician?  Guitarist...... give up  Record producer and former American Idol judge.  I don't have a card at hand. I do have some music cards that might have the band , but I will have too check that at a MUCH later time.

Okay, not a card stole/borrowed from the pages of a magazine. Guess I'm gonna have to pull a HOFer dupe out.  LOL.

The other Dave Johnson and long time MLB manager and former Brave, and one that also rests quietly in the birthday binders.

Another Randy Johnson, still need to pull the REAL RJ, lol.

Monday Mini continuation

Still running wild with the Name Game binder. I forget exactly where I left off so let us cross our fingers and hope no editing is needed.

A pair of Bobby Jones and the third missing is the golfer.

I have his football card too, just need to pull one out of my Falcons doubles.

Bob (Robert) the other is/was from the political Kennedy family.

Counterpart is also from the political Kennedys, the father. Tidbit of history, he made the bulk of his money by pulling his money out of the stock market just before the "crash" and then got into the bootlegging business during prohibition.

Eric's middle name is Steven, spelled differently from the author but as you can tell by now, close enough for me.

Johnny Knox, counterpart the actor/comedian best known for his part of JACKASS.

Okay I cheated a little here. Carl Lee (Haley) character from a movie and played by Samuel Jackson.

Bob (Robert): counterpart General Robert E. Lee, or maybe I could put a picture of the "Duke" brothers car.

I have the baseball card too.

Richard Lewis the comedian, although not my kind of funny.

Javy's counterpart is a current NFLer and I don't have a card of him.

Counterpart, the singer and the former Mr. Paltrow.

Counterpart: NFLer playing for the Buccaneers. Yes, I do have one, just need to pull one out.

These two guys share their name with the actor/comedian. I do not have one of his cards but I'm sure there is one out there.

Another Pedro Martinez pitched in the MLB too and used A. his middle initial on his cards. i have one somewhere.

These two MLBers is the counterpart Dodgers relative of Pedro above. I have since added his card into the binder but I didn't scan it.

Sundae Surprise!

Okay so there isn't any ice cream here, merely a play on words. However, there is a surprise that popped into my mailbox, two in fact. The first came from a trading buddy on the oldcardtraders site (aka: OCT). Don Roth avid golfer and die hard Mets Fan reserves the warmer days for playing golf and then when it gets too cold for that (he lives in New York) he bumps his baseball trading up. You need a minimum of 5 trades per quarter (3 months) amongst the group, no biggie there. I have done as many 50+.  Awhile back Don threw up some non vintage (aka: UV) inserts up for whoever wanted them. There were a lot, so I emailed him and said I'd take what ever he'd like to send, especially if they had Braves in them. I had forgotten about until I pull a prioirty envelope out of the mailbox. Hmm, i said what could be inside..... 9 pocket pages with 68% of a 50 card insert set. Scattered throughout the pages were 34 cards from 1995 Studio Gold credit card looking inserts. SWEET. I've scanned the three Braves that were among them.

These cards are pretty cool and to get 34 of them was SWEET (play on the Sundae thing).  Eight more of these went into the HOF player Binders even though 4 are not in yet, but will be soon as they are shoe ins and one that HOPEFULLY NEVER gets in....LOL.

The second surprise came in the form of a flat rate box from fellow blogger Pat (Hotcornercards).
I've scanned the Braves that hit my want list and here they are:

Some 2005 Diamond Kings, including the Framed Red of Andruw.

A few Fleer.

I didn't realize I needed so many from that Ultra set, still need a lot.

Two more knocked off the 1994 Bowman's Best set. I wasn't even aware of the #13 Matt Murray.

Can't complain about a needed Freeman, or a black parallel!

That shot exudes confidence. It's a shame that the Braves couldn't turn him into the player they had hoped for.  Oh well, great photo either way!
