On what is known as D-Day, more than 130,000 troops, under the command of U.S. general Dwight D. Eisenhower, cross the English Channel and land on six beaches along the Normandy coast. Their intent is to drive German forces out of France. The heaviest fighting occurs at Omaha Beach, where perhaps as many as 3,000 American men are killed or wounded.

ReplyDeleteMy grandfather was part of that battle. I have a photo of him in uniform a few months later visiting my great grandfather at work while he was on leave.
